Oxfordshire Geology Trust

Oxfordshire Geology Trust is a voluntary group working to protect our many Local Geological Sites and to raise public awareness of Oxfordshire's earth heritage.

Objective 3 (Theme 2)

Demonstrate relevance to sustainable development

  • Building stone study
On behalf of English Heritage, OGT has mapped the distribution of local building stone used in villages across Oxfordshire, in relation to geological outcrop.

Objective 5 (Theme 3)

Establish audit

  • Condition monitoring
The condition of all existing LGS sites has been monitored during the past 5 years.

Objective 6 (Theme 4)

Conserve through sites and areas

  • Designation of Local Geological Sites
Two new LGS sites were designated in 2012 and another three planned for 2013, bringing the Oxfordshire total to 48.

Objective 7 (Theme 4)

Maintain and enhance through management

  • Site clearance
6 LGS site clearance events have taken place during 2012-13.

Objective 9 (Theme 5)

Make relevant to the wider world

  • Library displays
Temporary displays on local geology have been arranged at some six local libraries and information centres.

  • Leaflets and interpretation board
A leaflet has been printed summarising places of geological interest in the county, also a trail guide for the area around Churchill village. An interpretation board was designed for Priests Hill SSSI.

Objective 10 (Theme 5)

Use the arts to involve people

  • Livelihoods linked to geology
The link between traditional livelihoods in the Oxfordshire Chilterns and the underlying chalk geology, was explored in a series of public talks.

  • Geodiversity and tourism
Following a 2012 Chalk Links project supported by the North Wessex Downs AONB, the possibilities of geotourism were explained at an AONB-hosted seminar for tourism representatives.

Objective 11 (Theme 5)

Create resources to help integrate geodiversity into learning

  • Rock Detectives
'Rock Detectives' days during half-term holidays encouraged children to take an interest in Earth Science (together with Wiltshire, Bedfordshire and Hampshire groups)

  • Geology in primary schools
A geological module was developed for local primary schools, with support from the Ernest Cook Trust. It was trialled with great success at over a dozen schools.

Objective 12 (Theme 6)

Involve more people

  • Volunteer groups and practical geoconservation.
Partnerships were established with several local groups (such as Green Gyms and a local fire brigade) to involve their members in site clearance activities, whilst informing them about local geology.

Objective 14 (Theme 6)

Encourage working together

  • Working together
Oxfordshire Geology Trust is an active member of both The Geology Trusts and Geoconservation UK, and has developed partnerships with geoconservation groups in neighbouring counties on specific projects.

  • Rock Detectives
'Rock Detectives' days during half-term holidays encouraged children to take an interest in Earth Science (together with Wiltshire, Bedfordshire and Hampshire groups)
